Blood transfusions can be required for a variety of reasons, including trauma, surgery, severe anemia, clotting disorders, and various diseases. By maintaining a ready supply of canine and feline blood products, we can respond quickly when a pet’s life is on the line.
Every unit collected is carefully tested, stored under optimal conditions, and used only when it will make the most impact. Our blood donors help:

Meet Our Heroic Blood Donor Pets
Our blood donors are cherished members of our veterinary family. Every donor pet belongs to one of our team members here at Hershey Animal Emergency Center, and each one undergoes thorough health screening to ensure they are healthy, happy, and safe to donate.
Arrow is a proud German Shepherd with a big heart. Not only is he a lifesaving blood donor, but he’s also full of playful energy. His favorite game is fetch, and nothing excites him more than when his family drops a whole bucket of tennis balls at once—so many choices, he can hardly decide which way to run. Arrow is also a gentle guardian. He adores his family’s grandchildren, spending endless hours running and playing with them whenever they visit. At night, he insists on sleeping in their room, keeping watch and making sure his little humans feel safe and protected. Arrow is not just a hero for the dogs who receive his life-saving donations, but also for the family who loves him dearly.
Norman is a mischievous cat with a big personality and an even bigger heart. At home, he’s known for causing playful mayhem and never turning down a good meal. But when it’s time to donate blood, Norman transforms into the sweetest boy—calm, brave, and ready to help save another pet’s life. He adores his cat and dog siblings and is always up for an adventure with his family. Whether he’s stirring up fun at home or quietly being a hero at the clinic, Norman proves every day that he’s one special kitty.
Ovechkin, or Ovi, is a one-year-old pitbull mix who found his forever family in 2025 through Pitties.Love.Peace. Now living in the Harrisburg area with his mom and fur-brother, Benny, Ovi is thriving in his new home. His favorite things include snacks, meeting new friends (beware of his unstoppable helicopter tail!), and gazing adoringly at his mom. When he’s not out making friends, Ovi takes his role as foster brother seriously—welcoming and caring for other rescue dogs until they find families of their own. With his big heart and happy spirit, Ovi is the perfect mix of playful companion and loyal family dog.
Trooper is estimated to be around 7 years old and was rescued in 2021 after being struck by a semi-truck. A state trooper rushed him to the Animal Hospital of Dauphin County, which is how he earned his name. When he arrived, Trooper was in critical condition. Remarkably, he had no broken bones, but he did suffer a severe wound on the back of his leg where muscle was missing. After multiple surgeries and lots of care, he made an incredible recovery—and today he acts as if nothing ever happened! Since then, we’ve also discovered that Trooper is bilingual—he understands both English and Spanish. He adores treats, toys, bath time, snuggles, and soaking up the sun. Above all, Trooper is a total sweetheart who soaks up attention and proudly embraces his role as a true ladies’ man.
